"In 2007, we had an awakening. We became completely aware of how utterly unaware we were of where our food came from and how it was produced. Rather than doing something as sensible as simply supporting a local farmers market we did something more radical. We promptly sold our suburban Atlanta home, quit our jobs as a teacher and corporate executive and devoted ourselves to the land and the animals, a story we retold in the Amazon bestseller "The Accidental Farmers". We had never milked a cow, petted a pig or held a chicken, but we dove in head first. We aimed to make a positive difference in the health of the soil, the life of the animals, the quality of nutrition for ourselves and others, and to inspire both consumers and anyone who felt a calling to farm. Our mantra became to reconnect animals to the land, and people with their food.
In 2010 we began milking cows and learned the art of cheese making. Thus began Nature's Harmony Farmstead Cheese. At first, our aim was simply to feed whey to the rare breed Ossabaw Island pigs that we still raise today, but along the way we fell in love with the old-world style of traditional cheesemaking. You know, cows on pasture every day, farmers doubling as cheese makers and producing great cheeses with flavor nuances that reflect the farm's local terroir. Something that both the farmers and the community could take pride in."
